Blood Bank

Blood bank is integral part of a hospital's healthcare services. The purposes of Blood Bank is:

  • Blood Collection and Storage: Blood banks are responsible for collecting, processing, and storing blood donations. They ensure that an adequate supply of blood and blood products, such as red blood cells, platelets, and plasma, is available for patients who require transfusions due to surgery, trauma, or medical conditions.

  • Blood Typing and Testing: Blood banks conduct tests to determine the blood type of donated blood and screen it for infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis. This ensures that donated blood is safe for transfusion to patients.

  • Crossmatching: Before transfusing blood to a patient, the blood bank performs a crossmatching procedure to ensure compatibility between the donor's blood and the recipient's blood. This helps prevent adverse reactions during transfusion.

  • Emergency Response: Blood banks often play a critical role in emergency situations, providing blood products quickly to patients in need of immediate transfusions due to severe injuries or medical emergencies.

  • Storage and Inventory Management: Blood banks carefully store blood products under controlled conditions to maintain their integrity and viability. They also manage inventory levels to ensure an adequate supply of blood for patient needs.
