Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The Gynaecology Department provides care for women across all age groups, addressing issues related to diseases of the female reproductive organs, family planning, and maternal health encompassing pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Its commitment lies in delivering high-quality, evidence-based clinical services to all patients within its purview once the department is fully operational.

Objectives: By the conclusion of training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, students will be able to

  1. Understand the socio-cultural, economic, and demographic factors influencing obstetrics and gynaecology practice.

  2. Appreciate the principles of reproductive anatomy and physiology.

  3. Comprehend the preconceptional, antenatal, intranatal, and postnatal factors impacting both mother and fetus.

  4. Identify changes and adaptations occurring in the mother during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period.

  5. Provide antenatal care, recognize deviations from normal pregnancy, and refer high-risk cases appropriately.

  6. Demonstrate proficiency in managing normal labor and providing adequate care for newborns.

  7. Assist couples dealing with infertility and individuals seeking contraception.

  8. Understand the normal menstrual cycle, etiopathology, and management of menstrual abnormalities.

  9. Gain knowledge about both benign and malignant tumors of the genital tract and the importance of screening and prevention.

  10. Recognize the significance of infections and other genital tract diseases.

  11. Familiarize with genital tract displacements and injuries.

  12. Understand the medico-legal and ethical considerations relevant to the specialty.

  13. Develop communication, decision-making, and managerial skills.

  14. Acquire competence in performing obstetrical and gynecological examinations, as well as certain minor investigations and therapeutic procedures.
